Thurmont is the gateway town to Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park, a real incorporated town with its own government and a compact Main Street that fills up every summer with hikers, campers and visitors headed up into the mountains.

In-town housing runs older and closer together near Main Street, with newer subdivisions on the outskirts. Catoctin Furnace, the historic ironworking site just south of town, and the surrounding farmland give the area a mix of small-town and mountain-gateway character.
